View Full Version : What's wrong with OS3.9 Installation using IdeFix Express?

Hello,

After installing OS3.9 with the IdeFix Express I only get black screen at the booting and nothing happens.

I followed this process for the installation.
Maybe I fail with something:

1)Departing from OS 3.1 with the drivers of IdeFix Express I insert the CD of OS 3.9 in the CD reader in order to create an OS 3.9 Emergency Disc as it was suggested me by a dutch friend last year.

2)Created the Emergency Floppy Disk on which the Drivers of IdeFix Express are saved I restart the Amiga from this floppy and then appears me a background raw WorkBench OS3.9

3)Then start the OS 3.9 Installatinon Like from the CD I and before finishing the process it goes to recover the IdeFix drivers CD-ROM (IdeFix Express) on the sameOS 3.9 Emergency Disk I have created.

4)The installation seems to happen with success but once that reboot I see balck screen and the Amiga doesn't load the OS3.9!!!!
Alternatively flash the reader CD-ROM and then the floppy disks drivers but the WorkBench it never goes out and the Amiga remains with the black screen without making OS go out me 3.9

Can you tell me if and where do I make mistakes?

I'm going crazy!

Thanks in advance Amigos!

Have you looked at the OS3.9 FAQ (http://www.gregdonner.org/os39faq/os39faq.html)?

Especially "Compatability" Q12

Q: Some special controller software is neither copied to the Emergency-Disk, nor to the installed AmigaOS 3.9 system. Are there workarounds until a fix is released in Boing Bag 1? (Controllers affected: FastATA, GVP SCSI, SurfSquirrel, X-Surf IDE). [fixed in OS 3.9 SE CD]

A:

* Solution for IDEFix (Express):
o The following lines (in bold) should appear in your S:Startup-Sequence as follows:
SetPatch SKIPROMUPDATES "scsi.device"
o Change the entry "C:IDEfix" to C:LoadIDE START QUIET

If you hold down the two mouse buttons and select "boot with no startup-sequence" from the early boot menu you should be able to make the necessary changes to your startup-sequence.

I recommend commenting out the existing lines and inserting the new ones - that way, if it doesn't work, you can easily restore the original Startup-sequence.

Regards

read carefully the OS3.9 FAQ page. (Installation tips > n1)

Probably is the wrong SetPatch

Q:

After installation, I have SetPatch v44.13 in my C: directory. Is this the latest version of SetPatch? [fixed in OS 3.9 SE CD]

A:

No. The latest version of SetPatch on the 3.9 CD (v44.16) is not copied to your hard drive during installation, and needs to be copied manually. There are five copies of SetPatch on the CD, so you'll want to copy the last entry listed in bold:

AmigaOS3.9:OS-Version3.9/First-Install/c/SetPatch ... 44.2 (04.10.99)
AmigaOS3.9:Emergency-Boot/C/SetPatch ... 44.13 (05.03.00)
AmigaOS3.9:OS-Version3.9/Workbench3.5/C/SetPatch ... 44.13 (05.03.00)
AmigaOS3.9:OS-Version3.9/Workbench3.9/C/SetPatch ... 44.13 (05.03.00)
AmigaOS3.9:OS-Version3.9/Emergency-Disk/C/SetPatch ... 44.16 (15.09.00)

and the very first line in Startup-Sequence must be:

C:LoadIDE START QUIET

C:SetPatch SKIPROMUPDATES "scsi.device" QUIET

Hello,

I cannot boot my Miggy with the CD-Rom connected so I don't know I to copy the new SetPatch that is located on the CD.
In my s/startup-sequence at the first lines is stated

;$VER: Startup-Sequence_HardDrive 45.2 (19.1.2001)

I have putted at the very first line what you said:

C:LoadIDE START QUIET

C:SetPatch SKIPROMUPDATES "scsi.device" QUIET

but I don't know if I need to put ; before every line with IF THEN and ELSE dealing with IdeFix or scsi.device.

I tried both option but it doen't work!

thanks

comment out with a ; all the following lines and add the above posted ones:

;Set SCSIUpdate 1
;If EXISTS C:IDEFix
;C:IDEFix
;Set SCSIUpdate 0
;EndIf
;If EXISTS SYS:Expansion/XSurfIDE
;Set SCSIUpdate 0
;EndIf
;If EXISTS SYS:Prefs/Env-Archive/NOSCSIUPDATE
;Set SCSIUpdate 0
;EndIf
;If $SCSIUpdate EQ 1
;SetPatch NOROMUPDATE QUIET
;Else
;SetPatch NOROMUPDATE QUIET
;EndIf
;Unset SCSIUpdate

C:LoadIDE START QUIET

C:SetPatch SKIPROMUPDATES "scsi.device" QUIET

Check also to have the LoadIDE command in C:

Silly question - do you have 3.1 roms installed?

Daniele

commented out with a ; all the lines that kindly suggested me Framiga and added the 2 lines at the beginning of the s/startup-sequence but I do not understand why it still doesn't work!

I got KS 3.1 of course!

I am wondering if I can connect the Cd-Rom without using Ide-Fix Express!

Is the 4-Way Ide different?
Does it have the same problems?
Other ways exists?

thx

is this the machine?

"A1200 Blizzard PPC 603e 125@MHZ 16MB /IDEFiXEX/CDROM/OS3.9"

no GFX card? which monitor?

remove the QUIET option from the SetPatch command to see where it hangs.

the OS 3.9 appear when I boot the Miggy without CD-Rom
so I think that the fault is of the Ide-Fix.
Do I need to change the scsi.device with the one of the Floppy Disk in boundle with the Ide-Fix Express?

Thx

is the problem maybe that after installing OS 3.9 and IdeFix Express Drivers I cannot find any scsi.device in DH0:DEVS ?

Where I can found scsi.device to copy in DH0:DEVS ?

I have no idea!

Hi Daniele. I'm just wondering, which of your amiga's are you having this trouble with?

SCSI and IDE are different formats, for two different technologies.

SCSI.device is normally in the STORAGE drawer if its not in the DEVS drawer.

scsi.device is in the Kickstart ROM, you don't need to copy it anywhere.

A1200 is the Miggy in trouble, obviously KS 3.1 and with IdeFix Express

Test with the harddrive and cd-rom on the primary IDE channel on the Idefix adapter, cd-rom as MASTER and harddrive as SLAVE

A1200's can be hard to get working sometimes, the hardware is buggy and the addons are often stuff you clip on chips, the bigger A4000 models don't give you so much trouble

Master and Slave is correct.

I have followed the process shown in the Amiga OS 3.9 FAQ at point 1 ,12, 22 . There talks about incompatibility between OS 3.9 and IdeFix Express and I followed the process but I see that the DEVS: directory on the DF0: after the installation doesn't have the scsi.device.
I remember last year when I installed OS 3.9 a friend of mine by internet helped me to install it and I remember that I copied a file delaing with scsi.device or atapi device in the directory DEVS: but actually at the moment I don't know where I can find the file scsi.device.
I gave a look at the Floppy of IdeFix Express but I don't see this file on the floppy!!!!

Daniele, there is no disk based scsi.device in your installation.

As already pointed out, the original scsi.device is in the kickstart which is patched on the fly by IdeFIX (or LoadIDE which is IdeFIX installed residently).

As already asked, post a full detaliled HW/SW configuration because otherwise, will be very hard to help.

btw ... where do you live in Italy?
