Hi,
I'd previously posted this in an existing thread (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=26865), but think it deserves an entry in this "tutorials" section so that it can be found more easily.
I had some spare time and have created a guide to installing a hard drive in an Amiga 1200 (or 600), along with partitioning it and installing Workbench. The guide can be found here (http://www.cdv.co.nz/support/amiga/001/).
I hope it's of use to someone... Didn't realise quite how many screenshots would be required! Slurp (http://www.aminet.net/package/gfx/misc/Slurp10) and KillRDB (http://thomas-rapp.homepage.t-online.de/download.html) were very useful - yes, I grabbed most of the shots on a real Amiga!
Note: this may not be its final resting place on the web, I'll either modify the URL above or post another note if the location needs to change.

Great! A very good and easy-to-follow tutorial.
It could also be useful to mention how to modify the MaxTransfer and Mask settings (for newer drives). MaxTransfer usually has to be 0x1fe00, but the Mask may vary, see here (http://www.xs4all.nl/~hjohn/SFS/mask.htm) for example.

What I miss is a AOS3.9 installation guide. On a blank drive with atapi or scsi cdrom.
I remember I strugeled a lot with this, and I still dont know how you are supposed to do this, "the right way". All my installes have been done with inserting the target drive in another amiga as slave and do the work from there with working cdrom.
I am yet to have an emergency disk that finds my cdrom.

Hi,
Thanks for your feedback above.
I may add a separate mini-guide about the Mask and MaxTransfer settings.
As for an OS3.9 install guide, I will consider that when I next have a few hours to spare (but that'll be done under WinUAE as I have no wish to kill my A3000's 3.9 setup!!!)

Thanks. That was a very good tutorial. I even learned something about why my partition icons are different!

Nice tutorial and very useful. I will do it when I have time. I was thinking to use a PC hard drive if I can't get one for Amiga.

You can find some installation tutorials on my web site. It covers Workbench 2, 3 and 3.9:

The guide can be found here (http://www.cdv.co.nz/support/amiga/001/).
I wanted to send someone the link to this tutorial today, but it seems to be broken... I hope it's not gone forever?
Note: this may not be its final resting place on the web, I'll either modify the URL above or post another note if the location needs to change.
Please do so, it's a great guide! :-)

Thanks for that link, that's exactly the info I needed! Even without the pictures, it will be most helpful I'm sure. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out what it's referring to.
I have something to add that wasn't mentioned when doing a hard drive installation inside the Amiga. Don't touch anything that you don't have to! I used to work in electronics manufacturing, and unless you use a grounding strap you could unintentionally fry components imperceptibly just by touching them. It's called ESD. You can get grounding straps from Radio Shack or other electronics suppliers, and either plug them into only the grounding plug part of a household outlet or put the clamp end onto some large metal object, like a desk.
