August 1 is the date of an ancient Pagan festival of Lammas or Lughnasadh (LOO-nah-sah). It marks the beginning of the last quarter of the Celtic year. The festival is associated with the god Lugh, or Samildanach, which means "he of many gifts".

What sort of festivities would normally mark this occasion?

One would hope lots of jiggling and rubbing of body parts!

Hum,
it is a fire festival, but a good old wicker man burning would be over the top on this occasion.
i would suggest something like a Barbie (weather permitting).

Although, having said that i few of my friends went to the Wickerman Festival over the weekend.

Now that's what I call a festival.
I went too and it was incredibly good fun.
So much so that I wrote a wee review of it.
You can read it here. (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&friendID=76580302&MyToken=3bfdd34b-9a74-42c4-a6e7-fdc13417bef0ML)
(There's also reviews of the recent Skye and T in the Park festivals on that page, as well as Roger Waters in France, if anyone's interested.)

A snippet:
Great music, great atmosphere, great weather, great company and hardly a ned in sight.
It's definitely the best Scottish festival I've ever been to. It's also the best festival I've been to anywhere for at least two years.
