Hello all,

My first post here. I have an A4000 (A500 & CD32 & A1200 also) that I've just got back into using and have a few issues as I'm very rusty with the ways of the Amiga.

I have finally managed to get 3.9 installed on the new hd. Couple of
problems though.

For some reason, OS 3.9 would not notice the 4th partition. No matter what I
did, the last partition would vanish. However it was shown in the HD Toolbox
under wb3.0. I ended up having to make partition 4 1mb in size so tht the
other 3 would remain. No big deal.

Now, the bigger problem. For some reason the other 2 partitions come up as
"not of required type" when I try to put something in them or move and
snapshot them. Any ideas? I've tried formatting them but when I use format
in OS3.9 the hd works for about 20 seconds then goes quiet. The computer
seems to lock up with only the curser moving, but nothing else working. The
HD Tool Box in 3.9 isn't as helpful as the previous one from 3.0 I feel, as
it want's to scrub the drive in order to "install" it. Well I only want to
format it my other 2 partitions.

Any ideas how I can sort this out?

In addition, the CDROM doesn't work unless I boot from the emergency boot
floppy that I created. What's going on here?

I feel I'm so close, yet so far from getting this thing operating properly
so I can start the installation of all my software.

....I better download and install the boing bags while I'm at it.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks again

Robert

I think I have found the problem. I now have to find the solution. The
partitions haven't got the Fast File System that OS3.9 requires and for some
reason when I go to Format them it causes the system to hang up after about
10 seconds of disk activity. I partitioned the drive using the 3.0 hd
toolbox, and formatted the partitions from the 3.0 floppy and installed the
flie system and international mode. Under 3.0 the partitions operate just
fine, but under 3.9 "not required type" is what I'm told. I'm wondering if I
should have partitioned it and formatted it from 3.0 disk without adding the
file system or international mode, then install 3.9 and format the other 3
poartitions from there. Maybe this would work?

Anyone?

The
partitions haven't got the Fast File System that OS3.9 requires

Run HDToolbox (no matter which version), go to partition drive, go to add/update, select FastFilesystem, click on Update, choose the FastFileSystem of OS3.9 (make sure it is version 44+), click on Ok or Save until you are back in the main menu, click on Save Changes To Drive (old HDToolbox only) and that's it. Do this for all your HDDs because the FFS found first is used, no matter if there are newer versions on other HDDs.

You have twice mentioned that you used the 3.0 HDtoolbox. Please say that's a misprint. If you still have the 3.0 ROMs, that's your trouble (at least one of the major ones).
Even the FFS on the 3.1 instal disk isn't all that great. Use a newer FFS!
