Win2k Virtual Device Drivers

This isn't urgent, it's just really annoying. I occasionally get this error:


16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem

SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDriv ers. VDD. Virtual Device Driver format in the registry is invalid. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.


I can either close or ignore this. If I ignore everything usually works ok.

When I looked in the registry there is one entry in the VirtualDeviceDrivers bit:

Name: (Default)
Type: REG_SZ
Data:


I am assuming that there should be an entry in the Data bit. Does anyone know what should be there?

It's safe to just delete the key, the only thing listed there on my machine is the Symantec Norton Antivirus VXD driver. Maybe an uninstall of norton left the empty key on your system?

We've never had Norton on this machine, so it's not that. If I delete the key will that stop the error coming up?

Seems on google the only problems I've found with that error in Win2k were norton Antivirus related, strange.

Not strange for windows. I upgraded my computer to Windows Xp, from Windows ME because of my DSL software. Several programs cannot install correctly in Windows ME if you have a DVD reader installed. Its kind of sad really.

Had this on a machine once, found this with google;

(Use at your own risk)

Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate and click the following value:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Virtual
DeviceDrivers\VDD
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
On the Edit menu, click Add Value.
Type VDD in the Value Name box, click REG_MULTI_SZ for the
Data Type, and then click OK.
The Multi-String editor appears. Leave this entry blank
and click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.

Never heard that one, tho everybody seems to agree that WinME is the worst Windows release since 95. Still, always fun to bash windows eh ?

I didn't have the VDD entry in the registry at all, so I had to try and create it.

I had problems creating it until I was using regedit instead of regedt32 :-P What is the point in having regedit if you can't do much with it. Mind you, it is Windows after all :-P

Anyway, got the VDD entry in there now and so far it seems to be working - mind you, it's only been there for 20 mins, and 5 mins of that was because I had to hit reset after it crashed and let it do the scandisk - but that was my fault, not connected to the regedit thing - I only remember that PCs can't multi-task AFTER it crashes. :-P
