I purchased a used Commodore 1950 monitor a few months back. When I initially tested it, it worked find with a PC laptop running in VGA 31khz mode. Image was stable and colors were good.

This weekend I hooked it up to my A1200 using a new CBM VGA adapter. The image generated had two noticable problems:

(1) The image was slightly jittery
(2) The left side of the screen was compressed slightly relative to the right side.

I was unable to get a stable picture after playing with the controls. More distirbingly, I noticed a buring smell comming from the monitor after a couple of minutes. I retried with my PC in VGA mode and the image was still good.

Is there any hope to get the monitor working well in 15khz mode? Could I have a problem with my Amiga-to-VGA adapter? Should I toss the monitor or look into getting it fixed?

Thanks!

Not sure what the problem is, but if something is wrong with the monitor it probably IS worth getting it fixed - 15KHz-31+KHz multisyncs are getting very rare. I'll also argue that they're the best display to have for a non-RTG Amiga.

I had that sort of problem, too. I could fix the jitteryness by wiggling the knobs in the little door a bit. Sometimes I had to do it for a while until I got it just right. I also had the problem of when I came out of a high resolution to a lower one, every other scan line was shifted over by a pixel or two. I think I had to switch in and out a few times to get the pixels back in place. I don't know how to fix the problems for good, I only had solutions I figured out and I just told you. I still remember the name of the guy in 1995 who sold me bum equipment who lived in Seattle. I finally figured out how come the ESC on the A1200 never worked, after a few years. How the lead to it got cut without anyone ever opening the keyboard itself up, I don't know. I always just thought that the programs I was using were screwy. :-(
