....the most ironic statement ever made by a priest?

Cardinal Bertone told Il Giornale: "The book is everywhere. There
is a very real risk that many people who read it will believe that the
fables it contains are true."

Which one? The Bible?

Although it isn't my usual sort of thing, I found "The Da Vinci Code" quite entertaining, actually. "Deception Point" was quite good too. I haven't yet read his other books.

Actually, Catholic theology is one of the few in Christendom which does not accept the Bibe as 100% written fact, but rather as a book inspired by God, yet written by human beings.

The basis for this belief is laid out in the 10th chapter of Augustine's Confessions, IIRC.

A lot of individuals are confused on the subject (including a fair number of Catholics) but it is one of the major theological differences between Catholicism and many of the mainstream Protestant denominations.

Sorry to dig up this old thread but THIS (http://edition.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Movies/05/15/cardinal.davinci.reut/index.html) little snippet is too similar and equally ironic, coming from:
the Vatican's highest authority on cultural issues after the Pope
..... no less:

"What I'm concerned about is that decent people who do not have the proper religious education will take this nonsense for the real thing,"

A bit like his own Bible - again.
:roflmao:

These loonies are too funny.....
