"There's a reason I did[didn't do] that, I don't quite recall what it was, but it made sense at the time."

Never failed me yet. Generic to almost any situation. :-P

A friend of mine was describing a typical argument between his ma and pa. Apparently the father is quite chilled out and just does things his own way but the mother is fiery and very particular about how things are done in the household.
One night the husband forgot to put the meat leftovers back in the fridge. The cat tipped it all onto the floor and made quite a mess in the kitchen. The next morning the ants were there in large numbers too. The wife was really angry. She spent ten minutes blasting him about being irresponsible, lazy, thick, messy and generally pointing out all his flaws and every little thing he had ever done that was remotely similar to the meat incident. All the while the husband was sitting there quietly, not answering back. The wife finished her tirade and stood there with arched eyebrows waiting for his excuse. His response was:

"You're probably right, but what can I do?"

Classic

Sure. Sounds good, but it won't scale.
