*sniffsniff*. All my masterful pieces of prose designed to enlighten the masses---gone :-(.

On the bright side of things: all the dreadful debates regarding the US elections are gone as well :-).

Nevertheless, great job for getting the site up and running again: I know it must have caused major arrythmia and hair loss, and in addition much anger in general since you had no choice but to upgrade the forums to code which was known not to be production-ready. Is there any indication that such a major corruption is now out of the question in the future, barring the odd head crash, or cat pissed in the server-scenario?

For now, get some rest and relax. I'm sure noone will mind the extra delay in services after this episode.

Yeah keep it up Wayne. I guess thats the problem with xoops; once the script kiddies hear about the exploits you have to upgrade again, an ongoing battle. Perhaps a more simplified custom system would be better at the expense of some features?

I don't normally go in for these "X is great" threads, but I think in this case it's deserved. Thanks Wayne for your hard work with this important community site.

11-09-2004, 07:10 AM
Thank you everyone. Please understand however that the site is hardly ever upgraded "because Wayne thinks it's cool". As of right now, we upgrade only when necessary or required to overcome obstacles such as security problems. In this case, we get stable forums but there is some sort of known security problem that will eventually rear it's ugly head in the future.

So in short, damned if we do, damned if we don't.

@Wayne

I'm sure everybody appreciates the upgrade decisions are not based on personal preference but on need.

Usually it is for the best, this time there were drawbacks. Let's face it, you did an excellent job under very bad circumstances.

:pint:

RunCMS? :-D

11-09-2004, 07:39 AM
RunCMS?Eventually. The plan right now is to work towards a data converter and have it ready for when I can complete an AO setup of RunCMS 1.1. That will be the next upgrade we make, and I'd like to get it so that we lose a minimum of data.

I was just sitting here, after getting over the drama of yesterday, laughingly thinking (in that Dr. Evil laugh) that if everyone in this thread were to send me only $20, I could afford the booze necessary for my recovery... :-)

Well, since it's an offspring of Xoops1, maybe the programmers of RunCMS want to help out ? (Guees you allready covered that... just checking ;-))

Here's a :pint: anyway :-D

50.3%... They're dumb, but not as dumb as you think ;-)

I digress though.... Let's get back to me "ruling"

Yeah okay. I do actually prefer this "older" look compared to the one a week ago. I just didn't like the flashiness. I just prefer things plain and simple. :-) It would also help people with slower modems and people using Amiga as internet.

Wayne

Well now that I saw the table layouts of both, I restate my offer to help in any way with that. Speaking of which, I had another stupidly awkard conversion job at work today. This time I had to write code to import data from an excel spreadsheet (completely linear data, reduced to a CSV file) into the admin backend that stored the data relationally in several different tables)...

That was... interesting ;-)
