While most shopkeepers decorate their storefront windows with seasonal kitsch or attractively arranged products, Bunnie Meyer has opted for a decidedly less festive display.
“Palestinians are pigs, murderous, scum pigs,” reads the largest of many word-processed signs in the front windows of Allphone Wholesale in Santa Monica. The collage includes a Star of David pendant and a picture of a bug-eyed Yasser Arafat with a caption reading, “If this was your neighbor, you would build a fence, too.” Meyer’s signs refer to Palestinians and Muslims as “rag head Arab pig[s],” “a violent cult of freaks started by a pedophile, misogynist pig,” and “scumbag {bleep}roaches descended from the bowel movements of pigs.” Meyer does not only reserve her vitriol for Arabs. Her signs also refer to Mexico as a “third world freak circus” and the recent Pico Boulevard beautification project as “StupidScape.”
A couple weeks ago, Josh Saxe, 22, a student at Cal State Los Angeles, was walking down Pico on his way to a meeting of the Santa Monica College group Progressive Alliance when he spotted Meyer’s signs. That night, he told his fellow activists about what he’d seen, and within days the group had organized a rally and march.
