View Full Version : Another Network question
02-11-2003, 10:36 AM
I have got a Broadband-Router for my Cable-Connection (Its an SMC Barricade with Firewall, really cool device and cheap !)
My PC is connected to that one and gets an IP
from the DHCP-Server that is built in.
The same for my Miggy...
Now the question:
Is it possible to use SAMBA when there are dynamic IP's ? Or is it better to use static ones?
What do ya think ?

It should work yes.. Youre talking about DHCP or?
What sort of tcp/ip program do you use on your miggy?
Trying to help.. I hope..

I have both MiamiDX and Genesis
(But my MiamiDX is not registered)
I'd like to use Genesis
And yes I talk about DHCP
I'm familiar with SAMBA..

In order for Samba to find the drive share you're connecting it to, it references the host name or IP address and the share name. Unless you're running a DNS server on your network, dynamic IP's will be significantly harder for you to use. It would be easier if you switch to static so you don't have to worry about the address changing on you and the Samba connection not working in the future because of it.
